Brief introduction of Central South University
Central South University is located in Changsha长沙 city, Hunan湖南 Province, a famous historical and cultural city in China covering an area of 3.17 million square meters across the two banks of the Xiangjiang River湘江.
Central South University was formed in April 2000 by the merger of the former Hunan Medical University原湖南医科大学, Changsha Railway College长沙铁道学院, and Central South University of Technology中南工业大学.
The predecessor of the former Central South University of Technology原中南工业大学 was the Central-South Institute of Mining and Metallurgy中南矿治学院, which was founded in 1952. The predecessor of the former Changsha Railway Institute原长沙铁道学院 was the Zhongnan Civil Engineering and Architecture Institute中南土木建筑学院, which was founded in 1953. The main disciplines of the two universities are traced back to the mining and road departments of the Hunan Higher Industrial School湖南高等实业学堂, which was founded in 1903.
The former Hunan Medical University原湖南医科大学, formerly known as Xiangya Medical College湘雅医学专门学校, founded in 1914, is one of the earliest Western medical colleges and universities founded in China.

Education Achivements and Rankings
Central South University has a graduate school, Xiangya Medical College, and 31 second-level colleges, with 107 undergraduate majors. The university has a complete range of disciplines, including philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, science, engineering, medical management, art, and other 10 disciplines, including military science. The university is an independent verification institution for academic degree authorization.
Since 2000, the university has won 86 National Science and technology awards (National Natural Science Award国家自然科学奖, National Technological Invention Award国家技术发明奖, and National Science and Technology Progress Award国家科学技术进步奖), including 14 National Science and Technology first prizes (special prize), ranking third among colleges and universities in China.
Central South University has three renowned hospitals, which enjoy the reputation of “Southern Xiangya南湘雅”, including Xiangya Hospital湘雅医院, Xiangya Second Hospital湘雅二医院, Xiangya Third Hospital湘雅三医院, and Xiangya Stomatological Hospital湘雅口腔医院.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Central South University 45th in the world, 5th in the Asia-Pacific, and 23rd in China.
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Central South University 44th in Asia and 23rd in China with its teaching and research performance.
Adhering to the principle of open education and active international cooperation and exchanges, the university is one of the first batches of universities to pass the quality certification for studying in China. It has established long-term cooperative relations with more than 260 universities and scientific research institutions in more than 50 countries and regions, including the United States, Britain, Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, and Russia, and has carried out extensive industry-university research cooperation with many multinational enterprise groups, initiated the establishment and participation of 12 international university leagues. At present, international students from more than 100 countries and regions are studying in school.
Xiangya Medical College of Central South University中南大学湘雅医学院 is the first medical school in China to start undergraduate education in accordance with the norms of modern medical education, Xiangya people have written half of the history of Chinese Western medicine.
There are only five joint examinations of medical colleges in the new country, and Xiangya Medical College ranks first in the country five times.
Since 1978, the Ministry of Health卫生部 has organized some graduates of subordinate colleges and universities to take the unified examination of basic and clinical knowledge three consecutive times, and many non-subordinate colleges and universities have participated in the latter two times. Xiangya ranked first in the country for three consecutive years. After Xiangya won three consecutive titles in the national unified examination for undergraduates of grades 77, 78, and 79, the examination was subsequently canceled.
In 1994, with the support of CMB, the Ministry of Health conducted the joint examination of 17 top medical universities in China, and Xiangya ranked first in the country again. In 2002, due to the enrollment qualification of the eight-year clinical medicine system, the Ministry of Education organized the seven-year medical examination, Xiangya ranks first in the country again.
From 2009 to 2017, Xiangya participated in the “national clinical skills competition for medical college students” eight times and won five special awards and three first prizes.
As of December 2017, Central South University has 2 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, 14 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 19 chief scientists of the “973 Plan” project (including 2 youth projects), 46 distinguished and lecture professors of the “reward plan”, 7 national famous teachers, more than 1500 professors and personnel with corresponding senior titles, and 496 experts enjoying special government subsidies.
