Brief introduction of Southeast University
Located in Nanjing, the ancient capital of the Six Dynasties, Southeast University is a famous institution of higher learning at home and abroad. The school is a national key university directly under the Ministry of Education and jointly established with Jiangsu江苏 Province, and is one of the key construction universities of the national “Project 985″985工程 and “Project 211″211工程. In 2017, Southeast University was selected as a class A university in the construction of world-class universities.
The predecessor of Southeast University is the Sanjiang Normal School三江师范学堂, which was founded in 1902.
In 1921, through the vigorous advocacy of Guo Bingwen郭秉文, a famous educator in modern times, Southeast University was formally established on the basis of Nanjing Higher Normal School, becoming one of the only two national comprehensive universities in China at that time.
In 1928, the university was renamed National Central University国立中央大学, with seven schools of Science, Engineering, Medicine, Agriculture, Liberal Arts, Law, and Education.
In 1952, the national faculties and departments were adjusted, the arts and sciences and other subjects were moved out, with the former School of Engineering of CUHK原中大工学院 as the main body, and successively merged into the related departments of Fudan University复旦大学, Jiaotong University交通大学, Zhejiang University浙江大学, Jinling University金陵大学, and other schools, and established Nanjing Institute of Technology南京工学院 on the original site of the headquarters of central university.
In May 1988, the school was renamed Southeast University.
After more than one hundred years of pioneering development, Southeast University has now become a comprehensive university with engineering as its characteristic and coordinated development of science, engineering, medicine, liberal arts, management, and art.
Education Achivements and Rankings
In recent years, the school has vigorously strengthened the construction of disciplines and achieved fruitful results. 11 first-level disciplines ranked among the top ten in the national overall level assessment from 2002 to 2004, of which 6 first-level disciplines ranked in the top five in the country.
At present, the university has 60 undergraduate majors, 206 master’s programs, 93 second-level discipline doctoral programs, 16 first-level discipline doctoral degree authorization points, 15 postdoctoral research mobile stations, 10 national key disciplines, 6 national key discipline cultivation points, 10 key disciplines in Jiangsu Province (including 1 “Top priority” discipline in Jiangsu江苏 Province), 22 national, provincial and ministerial key laboratories and engineering research centers.
As of April 2020, Southeast University has four campuses, namely Sipailou四牌楼, Jiulonghu九龙湖, and Dingjiaqiao丁家桥, covering an area of 5,888 square meters, of which the Jiulonghu campus is 3,752.35 square meters, with a total floor area of 789,700 square meters.
Southeast University is one of the universities with great international influence in China. Since the reform and opening up改革开放, its international exchange activities have become more active. It has signed cooperation and exchange agreements with more than 100 universities and research institutions in more than 30 countries and regions, such as the United States, Germany, Japan, Switzerland, Australia, The United Kingdom, France, Italy, Canada, and South Korea.
As of 2021, the Times Higher Education World University Rankings ranked Southeast University 71st in Asia and 17th in China with its education and research performance.
Academic Ranking of World Universities, also known as the “Shanghai Ranking”, placed Southeast University 151-200th in the world, 17th in China.
In the third round of national discipline evaluation, Southeast University has 15 disciplines entering the top 20%, 12 disciplines entering the top seven in the country, and 10 disciplines ranking in the top five in the country, of which biomedical engineering, transportation engineering, art theory, and other 3 disciplines rank first in the country, architecture, electronic science and technology, landscape architecture and other 3 disciplines rank second in the country, civil engineering, urban and rural planning, and other 2 disciplines ranked third in the country, information and communication engineering ranked fourth.
Instrument Science and Technology ranked fifth, power engineering and engineering thermophysics ranked sixth, public health and preventive medicine ranked seventh, and the number of disciplines ranked first in the country. Seven disciplines, including engineering, materials science, mathematics, physics, chemistry, clinical medicine, and computer science, entered the top 1% of the ESI world; engineering rose to 83rd place.
Quality engineering: Southeast University is one of the ten universities jointly implemented by the Ministry of Education and the Chinese Academy of Engineering to implement the pilot reform of higher engineering education, and is the first batch of universities implemented by the Ministry of Education’s “Outstanding Engineer Education and Training Program” and “National Innovative Experiment Program for College Students”.
Southeast University National University Science Park: As a platform for transferring scientific and technological achievements, transforming innovative and entrepreneurial talents, cultivating high-tech enterprises, cultivating and developing strategic emerging industries, the National University Science and Technology Park of Southeast University has built more than 200,000 square meters of innovation and entrepreneurship carriers, with more than 300 enterprises in the park and more than 1,000 graduated enterprises.
Cooperation and exchange: As of January 2015, Southeast university with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology of the University of Cambridge, Germany, Australia’s Monash University, French’s first university, and so on more than 100 universities and research institutions signed a cooperation agreement.
The school has more than 6,000 faculty members, including more than 1,500 professors, more than 300 doctoral supervisors, 8 academicians of the two academies, 1 member of the Degree Committee of the State Council, 9 members of the disciplinary review group of the Degree Committee of the State Council, 20 chair professors, young and middle-aged experts with outstanding contributions at the national, provincial and ministerial levels, winners of the Outstanding Youth Science Fund, and more than 130 outstanding talents such as members of the “863” and “973” expert groups.
